Innovative Encounters


The primary goal of the Innovative Encounters Workgroup (WG) is to evaluate business cases, return on investment (ROI), and overall operations and functionality related to data exchange for innovative encounter models (e.g., electronic visits and communication, electronic monitoring, telemedicine) using existing and emergent technologies that will foster enhanced collaboration between patients and providers at a lower cost and with increased value. The WG evaluates the exchange of encounter information between patient and provider to identify ways to facilitate exchange of data, innovative encounter capabilities, and roles and responsibilities of health care stakeholders in facilitating change and implementation.

Setting the Stage for Innovative Encounters

The 2013 WEDI Report (“Report”) centered on two overarching ideas, which were to accelerate innovation and solve challenges to lower costs and improve the efficiency of health care. The Report further explored the following four areas of focus.

  • Patient Engagement
  • Payment Models
  • Data Harmonization and Exchange
  • Innovative Encounter Models

An Innovative Encounters Model Subworkgroup was formed to develop the findings for the Report. Following the release of the Report, the Innovative Encounters Workgroup was formed to continue the work on the findings and recommendations.

The purpose of this issue brief is to provide a summary of the Report as it pertains to innovative encounters and set the stage for the work of the Innovative Encounters Workgroup.
