WEDI Issues White Paper Exploring Various Telehealth Modalities

Document offers guidance on various modes of delivering patient care using telehealth services and technology, including virtual encounters, wearable devices, integrated care management
District of Columbia— March 16, 2018 — The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI), the nation’s leading nonprofit authority on the use of health IT to create efficiencies in healthcare information exchange and a trusted advisor to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), today announced the release of their latest industry white paper addressing Telehealth Modalities.
Written by the WEDI Telehealth Workgroup, the 17-page white paper’s purpose is to provide information on the various modes of delivering patient care using telehealth services and technology, including virtual encounters, remote patient monitoring, wearable devices, and integrated care management.
According to the paper: “There are numerous services provided under the umbrella of ‘telehealth’ and there are many methods through which to deliver those services.” The more common modalities being used today are further explored and multiple examples are given to demonstrate their real-world uses. The document concludes by suggesting that these modalities are not finalized and additional changes are expected in the delivery of telehealth services. Additionally, more studies are needed to better understand the full impact of telehealth in the delivery of health care services.
